Digital television system, as
it stands, refers to electrical transmission system that all
data through video or audio devices be sent by digital transmission
method after digital signal processing. Digital process refers
to converting analog signal into digital one composed of 0
and 1 by intense digital technology. (refer to the picture
below) This converted signal is sent by digital transmission
process after being condensed with other information, the
transmitted signal is again converted to the original video
or audio devices.
Digital television is, so called,
3rd-generation television set that has passed by black-and-white,
and also color age. Digital television is attached by a special
IC (integrated circuit), on which various function can be
added. By converting analog signal transmitted from broadcasting
center, into digital signal through the IC, not only does
it prevent video and audio signal from deterioration but also
restores the signal accurately so that there is neither duplicated
image caused by reflection of analog electric wave nor noise
at all.
The number of scanning line in digital television reaches
to 1,050 and the screen quality gets clean that much. We are
able to compose multiple-screens in it by memory and process
function of its broadcasting signal so as to enjoy 2 or 3
channels in one screen simultaneously, capture and enlarge,
confirm the captured motion or print it out, a variety of
functions else.
The appearance of digital television is at the time of distribution
of IC, changing analog signal to digital one, which was developed
by a German company in 1982, into the world market. In Korea,
we succeeded in making digital television mass-production
applying this IC sample and once was it showed on exhibition
held in September, 1983.
-
Strong to noise
and transmitting electrical power is little consumed in
comparison to analog signal
-
The technology of error-correction
is usable and the deterioration due to
transmission, copying and accumulation is small.
-
Condensing a big width of video
and audio signal is possible.
-
It is easy to search, process
and edit information.
-
If and only if OFDM (Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiplexing) is selected,
strong to ghost interruption
-
The utilization of LSI (Large
Scale Integration) technology is easy because
transister and IC are suitable to the binary scale. These
features is what DT has.
Digital broadcast using digital
technology, which has these features, is strong to noise and
realizes efficient transmission of information so that it
has diverse merits in comparison to current analog television.
First of all, digital television is clearer as twice as analog
one because analog television on which the number of width
scanning line is 525, has only about 330 lines of horizontal
resolution, otherwise, that of HD digital TV almost reaches
to 700 lines. If the digital television adapting PDP or LCD
rather than CRT was commercialized, screen quality could be
improved thanks to MPEG2 and digital- signal process technology.
In aspect of sound quality, current analog television provides
just 2-channels of stereo sound, on the contrary, digital
television sung AC3 technology provides 5.1-channel stereophonic
sound which can only be enjoyed in public theater.
There is also big difference in width-height ratio of screen.
Current television has 4 to 3 ratio for width to height, on
the contrary, digital television has 16 to 9 ratio basically,
the same ratio of theater screen.
There is a difference also in compatibility between digital
television and analog one. Digital television is data-compatible
by serial interface with let alone PC, digital multifunctional
DVD player which processes signal in digital way, digital
cam-coder, digital VCR.
But, rather than these factors, the more innovative meaning
given to digital television is multimedia function that digital
it provides, let alone internet search, home-banking, and
so on, which enable diverse two-way additional functions.
