The current analog television
broadcast is able to carry on only one image along one electric
wave so that sound had to be sent along another wave. On the
contrary, for digital broadcasting is able not only to carry
on multiple images or sound along one electric wave but also
to condense information without damaging quality, 4 to 8 channels
are to be set in one channel of frequency band in conventional
analog broadcasting. In addition, it is easy to control information
by using computer, and two-way interactive, with which viewers
can send order information, is also feasible.
Digital broadcast uses this condensing
technology and multiple modulation technology also to communications
device or computer in order to condense images and sound and
to modulate many signals. So, digital broadcast is core technology
in recent multimedia era when broadcasting, communicating and
computer are combined. In Europe and the States, not only satellite
broadcast and cable television but also conventional electric-wave
broadcast is rapidly digitalizing.
The change in broadcasting services
will bring about that of the current broadcasting industry itself,
likewise, adapting digital technology and introducing digital
satellite broadcast will cause epochal drop in broadcast transmission
cost.
Accordingly, broadcasting industry would be more developed.
It is a good illustration that only less than 20 Japanese entrusted
broadcasting companies (they fall under PP of cable TV in Korea)
are now increased to more than 100 companies.
Moreover, it will have an effect on the structure of broadcasting
industry so that it is looked out that the advent of multi-channel
period to come with broadcast digitalization would ease the
current monopoly, electric wave broadcasting oriented structure,
and in advanced countries of broadcasting industry such as
the States, the structure is also changing by digitalization
and the entrance of new media mean, which was already mentioned.
The introduction of competition in broadcasting industry
and the technically integrating phenomenon in broadcasting
and communications industry would also promote integration
among mass media which has been being developed separately.
Consequently, this would not only make multiplex media group’s
(including broadcasting applications and services) appearance
but also fundamentally reorganize mass media market through
technical integration or company M&A. Especially, the
coordination of broadcasting communications network and globalization
coming with digitalization would accelerate also the globalization
of broadcasting industry.
